Thai PM Tours Chang Circuit Amid MotoGP Contract Uncertainty & Political Tensions
BURIRAM, Thailand – Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra visited the Chang International Circuit today, where politics and sports collided amid uncertainty over Thailand’s MotoGP contract renewal. The tour, led by Newin Chidchob, the influential president of the racetrack and key figure in the Bhumjaithai Party, ignited speculation about political tensions within the ruling coalition.
A Political Pit Stop
Though the PM’s visit was officially linked to a provincial development meeting for the 2025 fiscal year, the spotlight was on a five-minute closed-door meeting between Paetongtarn and Newin inside a VIP lounge.
The Pheu Thai-led government and Bhumjaithai Party have been at odds, particularly after Newin criticized delays in renewing Thailand’s MotoGP contract with Dorna Sports, which expires next year.
Despite the whispers of conflict, Paetongtarn dismissed concerns with a casual remark:
“We weren’t fighting in the first place.”
MotoGP’s Uncertain Future in Thailand
Newin’s outspoken frustration over the lack of urgency in securing a new MotoGP contract has raised concerns that Thailand might lose its spot on the global circuit. His remarks were seen as a jab at Pheu Thai’s handling of sports tourism and international agreements.
In response, the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) issued a statement clarifying that no decision had been made yet regarding an extension of the contract beyond 2026.
Tourism, Politics & Power Plays
While the prime minister praised Chang Circuit’s contribution to Thailand’s tourism and economy, the visit underscored the delicate political balancing act within the coalition.
With the MotoGP contract deadline looming and political alliances under scrutiny, the race to keep Thailand in the MotoGP calendar is as intense as any battle on the track.
