Thailand Advances Medical and Wellness Tourism to Boost Economy

Health authorities are fully backing the government’s initiative to promote medical and wellness tourism, a sector expected to play a key role in driving economic growth.

Medical and wellness tourism involves traveling—often internationally—to seek healthcare treatments and wellness services. Recognizing its potential, the government aims to establish Thailand as a global medical hub by 2030, aligning with the 13th National Economic and Social Development Plan.

Akom Praditsuwan, director-general of the Department of Health Service Support, emphasized the economic impact of this strategy. “The government’s medical hub initiative, part of the national development plan, anticipates medical tourism contributing 1.7% to GDP,” he said. The current phase of the plan spans from 2023 to 2027.

Thailand has already witnessed significant growth in medical and wellness tourism. Dr. Akom noted that foreign visitors seeking medical services surged from 1.2 million to 3.4 million in recent years. Additionally, spas, a major attraction for tourists, recorded 40 million visits—including locals—in 2018.

To further promote this sector, authorities have announced three major international events this year: the Top Wellness Global Summit (TWGS), Global Economic Forum, and Global Sustainable Energy Forum. These events are scheduled for June 11-14 at the InterContinental Hotel in Bangkok.

The TWGS will showcase the latest advancements in healthcare, anti-ageing medicine, beauty and aesthetics, and the mind-body connection. Eurblarp Sriphiromya, executive director of the Tourism Products Department, believes the event will provide a platform to highlight Thailand’s medical and wellness services. “TWGS will strengthen the local economy, especially benefiting villagers producing herbal products,” he stated.

The government estimates the annual value of Thailand’s medical tourism sector at US$34.6 billion.

Bernice Jenvdhanaken, business development manager for the Polish Investment and Trade Agency, stressed the importance of these events. “They provide crucial platforms for collaboration on global wellness, economic growth, and sustainable energy,” she said, confirming Poland’s active participation in these discussions.

With strong government backing and growing international interest, Thailand’s medical and wellness tourism industry is poised for substantial expansion, reinforcing its status as a premier destination for health and wellness travelers worldwide.
