Thailand export grew 10%

Thailand exports bangkok one march 1 2024

Thailand’s expanding export sector experienced a 10% year-on-year surge in January, continuing a streak of six consecutive months of growth. This upward trajectory in exports, coupled with increasing private investment, consumption, and tourism, is forecasted to propel the economy to a 2.8% growth rate in 2024.

The 10% export growth registered in January 2024 signifies a positive outlook for stronger GDP expansion this year. Nonetheless, the growing trade deficit with China poses a notable challenge to Thailand’s economy, posing threats to local industries and employment. Addressing concerns related to undervalued imports, trade agreement exploitation, and the smuggling of Chinese products is imperative for safeguarding local industries and mitigating further trade imbalances.

The mounting trade deficit with China, exacerbated by the influx of inexpensive imports saturating the market, remains a persistent issue of contention. Thailand’s trade imbalance with China hit a historic high in 2023, marking the fifth consecutive year of trade deficits. In 2023, the trade deficit with China stood at US$36 billion, escalating from $29 billion in 2022, driven by Thailand’s import volume surpassing its export figures. Notably, Thailand’s import value from China amounted to $105 billion in 2023, while exports totaled only $69 billion.

With China representing Thailand’s foremost trading partner, constituting 22% of the nation’s overall trade, Thailand heavily relies on a diverse array of Chinese imports encompassing electronics, machinery, and chemicals. Conversely, Thai exports to China predominantly feature agricultural commodities like rubber, rice, and seafood. The trade deficit primarily stems from the upsurge in intermediate goods imports such as electronics and machinery, crucial for producing final goods for export, albeit not classified as exports themselves.
