Thailand is preparing to scrap its 60-day visa-free entry scheme as part of efforts to improve visitor screening and promote higher-quality, sustainable tourism, Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul said.
Speaking at the Global Sustainable Tourism Conference 2026 in Phuket, he said the government is shifting focus toward long-stay, high-value travellers while ensuring tourism benefits local communities and meets environmental and safety standards.
Authorities are reviewing visa policies following a trial period, with a proposal to end visa-free entry for all countries and revert to previous arrangements, alongside introducing tailored visa categories.
The plan, which will be submitted to the cabinet, also includes stricter screening measures covering financial status, investment sources and supporting documents.
Officials added that concerns over tax avoidance by foreign residents will be closely monitored, with violations subject to legal action.
