Thailand Unveils Special Commemorative Coins to Honour Royal Milestone
BANGKOK – The Thai Treasury Department has announced the release of a special collection of Samamongkol commemorative coins to mark a historic milestone in the reign of His Majesty King Rama X, who has now reached 26,469 days of age—the same lifespan as King Rama I, the founder of the Chakri Dynasty.
The milestone was reached on January 14, and the commemorative coins will go on sale starting Monday.
According to Lavaron Sangsnit, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Finance, the coins have been issued to honour this rare and meaningful moment in Thai royal history.
The new release includes six types of circulating coins as well as two special commemorative editions. These coins will be produced in various metals—copper, nickel, silver, and gold—with face values ranging from 20 to 30,000 baht.
Ekniti Nitithanprapas, director-general of the Treasury Department, noted that the 30,000-baht coins are crafted from 99% pure gold.
Each coin’s front features portraits of King Rama I and King Rama X, separated by the Chakri Dynasty emblem. The reverse side bears the denomination beneath His Majesty’s royal emblem.
Two versions of the 30,000-baht gold coin will be available: a polished edition priced at 70,000 baht, limited to just 2,500 coins nationwide, and a non-polished version priced at 60,000 baht.
All proceeds from the sale of these coins will be presented to His Majesty the King, Lavaron added
