Thailand wants to host World Pride in 2028 to show that the country is accepting of LGBT+ problems and has an open mind about them.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin told government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke that his government will fully back the bid and that he would set aside money for the event if the country is chosen. She said the event would also help the business and bring more people to the area.
Australia will host the 2024 World Pride event. It will be in the US in 2025 and the Netherlands in 2026.
Srettha was speaking at a meeting where people were talking about marriage equality and a plan to cover transgender people under the country’s health insurance plan for everyone.
Chai said that a draft law for equal marriage will be brought up for discussion in the Cabinet next Tuesday. The Parliament should then take a look at it in early December.
He did say that there should be a plan for the process that includes everyone’s thoughts.
Srettha is hopeful that a bill for marriage equality will be easily passed. This bill would give same-sex couples the same legal rights as straight couples.
