The incidence of shoplifting in Hong Kong has risen by nearly 12%.

A recent report from Hong Kong police shows a nearly 12% increase in shoplifting cases. Police noted that some perpetrators, despite being able to afford the items, acted impulsively due to psychological issues. Clinical psychologist Michael Fung Ho-kin highlighted that for some individuals, stealing served as a way to seek emotional fulfillment rather than for economic gain.

The report, covering thefts from shops between January and May, indicated a rise to 3,678 cases, an increase of 11.9% compared to the same period last year. Approximately 6.9% of cases involved repeat offenders. Police have arrested 1,959 people in connection with these incidents. Non-governmental organization SideBySide, which assists detained shoplifters, revealed that financial troubles were not always the primary motive. Supervisor Ip Chi-wai mentioned a case of a housewife caught stealing despite having enough money, pointing to underlying emotional distress.

Chief Inspector Kelly Choi Wing-yuk from the crime prevention bureau added insights about the factors influencing shoplifting, highlighting seasonal patterns and the types of goods frequently targeted. The article also discussed how some individuals turned to theft as a form of temporary thrill or coping mechanism, but emphasized the harmful cycle it creates in the long run.
