Rust Movie set shooting see Alec Baldwin charged

The shooting in “Rust” will lead to Alec Baldwin being charged with manslaughter.

Alec Baldwin, who shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the Rust set in October 2021 outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the southwest of the United States, will face charges, according to a prosecutor.

Baldwin and several other people will face two counts of involuntary manslaughter, according to the district attorney’s announcement on Thursday. Mary Carmack-Altwies.

Hutchins was the target of Baldwin pointing a pretend gun when they were filming a scene in a tiny church. Director Joel Souza was injured and killed when it discharged, but he survived.

Carmack-Altwies stated, “I have determined that there is sufficient evidence to press criminal charges against Alec Baldwin and other members of the Rust film team after a careful examination of the evidence and the laws of the state of New Mexico.

“Under my leadership, no one is above the law, and justice must be served to all.”

The latest development in a peculiar case that has sparked concerns about the shooting’s circumstances and the safety protocols for crew members on film sets is the announcement that charges will be brought.

According to Baldwin, there should have been no way for live ammo to enter the filming area and that he was not to blame for the mishap.

The prosecution announced that Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, an armorer, will face the same two counts of involuntary manslaughter as Baldwin. The maximum penalty for the fourth-degree felony offense is $5,000 in fines and 18 months in prison.

According to a statement released by Carmack-Altwies on Thursday, assistant director David Halls entered into a plea agreement for the allegation of careless use of a deadly weapon.

A defendant in the US court system often enters a guilty plea before a case gets to trial in exchange for a more lenient sentence. Baldwin said in a TV interview in 2021 that he hadn’t pushed the trigger, but the FBI, the top domestic intelligence agency in the US, conducted a forensic examination and discovered that the gun “functioned normally” and wouldn’t have fired without the trigger being pulled.

Also in question are the working conditions on set and whether careless behavior and shoddy protocol contributed to a risky environment.

For “willful” safety violations and a disregard for weapon safety protocols, New Mexico’s worker safety agency handed the movie’s production firm the maximum punishment in April 2021.

Hutchins’ family reached a settlement about the incident, which they referred to as a “horrible accident,” in October 2022.

In anticipation of a pricey and well-publicized trial, if charges were to be brought, Carmack-Altwies recruited a special prosecutor for the case and obtained around $318,000 in state funding.
