The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has launched the “Sukhumvit Model,” an initiative designed to enhance safety, public order, and the overall quality of life along Sukhumvit Road.

Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt led a nighttime inspection of the area on Thursday, accompanied by deputy governor Wisanu Subsompon, Deputy Interior Minister Theerarat Samrejvanich, and other senior officials.

The inspection covered a route from Sukhumvit Soi 39 to Soi 3 in Watthana district, including the Asoke Intersection, and extended through sois 4–24 in Klong Toey district, totaling over five kilometers.

This project aims to address a wide range of urban issues impacting both residents and visitors.

Governor Chadchart highlighted recurring problems such as illegal cannabis sales, drug trafficking, homelessness, unauthorized street vending, and unlicensed taxis. Other concerns included loud noise from tuk-tuks, parking violations, inadequate street lighting, limited CCTV coverage, broken sidewalks, and unsightly overhead communication cables.

“These issues are interconnected and influence the city’s image and daily life,” he stated. “If we can resolve them here, Sukhumvit could serve as a model for the rest of Bangkok.”

Deputy Interior Minister Theerarat explained that the initiative follows directives from Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, focusing on ensuring residents’ safety, enhancing well-being, and restoring confidence among tourists.

The BMA is collaborating with at least eight key agencies, including the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), and the Department of Land Transport (DLT), to implement the scheme.

“The ultimate aim is to transform Bangkok into a safe, livable city free from illegal activities—where residents feel secure and tourists can enjoy their visit with peace of mind,” Ms. Theerarat added.
