The motorcyclist who hit and injured a Korean tourist while they were using a pedestrian crossing on Phaya Thai Road last week has been summoned for police questioning on Tuesday.
This incident occurred at the same location where a female doctor was tragically killed by a speeding motorcycle in 2022.
The motorcyclist, identified only as Kwanchai, is expected to report to investigators at the Phaya Thai police station, where he will likely face charges of reckless driving resulting in injury and negligence causing bodily and mental harm under Section 390 of the Criminal Code.
The negligence charge may result in a fine of up to 10,000 baht and/or one month in prison, while a charge of reckless driving causing serious injury could lead to a maximum of three years imprisonment and/or a fine of 60,000 baht under Section 300.
Pol Col Watcharawee Thammasaema, chief of the Phaya Thai police station, mentioned on Monday that the questioning of Mr. Kwanchai had been postponed due to his minor injuries from the accident.
Dashboard camera footage from a nearby vehicle captured Mr. Kwanchai driving a motorcycle with a passenger through a red light, colliding with a 68-year-old Korean man who was crossing the street on the evening of January 23. The incident took place in front of the Bhumirajanagarindra Kidney Institute Hospital, and the man fell to the ground unconscious, later being transported to Phyathai 1 Hospital.
Three years prior, on the same pedestrian crossing, Dr. Waraluck Supawatjariyakul from Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine was fatally struck by an off-duty police officer riding a Ducati motorcycle on January 21, 2022, an incident that sparked national outrage.
Pol Col Watcharawee confirmed that Mr. Kwanchai’s blood alcohol test returned negative results. Relatives of the injured Korean man, who reside in Thailand, are expected to meet with police later this week to act on his behalf. They may pursue compensation through the courts, he stated.
