European aviation company Airbus has announced that Vietnamese airline Vietjet Air has expressed interest in purchasing 20 of its A330-900 planes. According to Airbus, Vietjet signed a memorandum of understanding for these wide-body aircraft, which are intended to replace the airline’s existing fleet of leased A330-300 planes.
Christian Scherer, chief executive of Airbus’s commercial aircraft business, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Vietjet on the next phase of the carrier’s expansion. This potential deal is anticipated to become Vietjet’s largest-ever widebody aircraft purchase once finalized.
Benoit de Saint-Exupery, executive vice president of sales at Airbus’s commercial aircraft business, described the agreement as a “commitment to purchase” by Vietjet during a briefing at the Singapore Airshow. Airbus expects the deal to be concluded in the next few weeks, with the first delivery scheduled for 2026.
Vietjet currently operates a fleet of 110 aircraft on approximately 30 international routes. The new A330neo aircraft, should the deal be finalized, will serve Vietjet’s expanding long-range network and high-capacity regional services, replacing the carrier’s leased A330-300s and facilitating network expansion.
Vietjet’s CEO, Dinh Viet Phuong, underscored the strategic importance of introducing the new A330neo aircraft, emphasizing its role in modernizing the airline’s fleet comprehensively and supporting the company’s sustainable development strategy with ESG goals, aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Vietnamese airlines have been actively expanding their fleets to accommodate the growing number of passengers, fueled by the recent surge in domestic travel and the increasing demand for international air travel.
