Above It All: Bangkok’s Golden Mount at Wat Saket

High above Bangkok’s chaos, there’s a hill crowned by gold and silence. Wat Saket’s Golden Mount isn’t the flashiest temple in the city—but it’s one of the most spiritually grounded and visually rewarding.

Above It All: Bangkok’s Golden Mount at Wat Saket

Located off Ratchadamnoen Avenue, the Golden Mount rises above the Old Town like a golden beacon. The climb to the top—around 300 gentle steps—winds through shady trees, gongs, and prayer bells. You’ll pass trickling fountains and weather-worn statues as you spiral upward. There’s no rush here, no tour groups pushing past, just the rhythmic clink of metal and the distant hum of traffic below.

At the summit stands the golden chedi, gleaming against the sky. On clear days, the views stretch all the way to Sathorn. But it’s not just about the skyline. The rooftop level feels calm, even sacred. Locals still come to pray. Monks sweep the tiles in the early morning light. Pigeons circle the spire. It’s Bangkok, but paused.

Wat Saket dates back to the Ayutthaya period, but the Golden Mount itself was completed during the reign of King Rama V. For centuries, it served as a cremation site and a place of prayer. During Loy Krathong, the temple still hosts candle-lit processions, wrapping the mount in glowing spirals of faith.

If you go, time it early—just after 8:00 a.m.—or late afternoon to avoid the heat. Entrance is still a modest ฿50. Bring water, take your time, and enjoy the rare peace that only comes from being above it all.
