World’s hottest player Niemann wins LIV event in Saudi Arabia

Chile’s Joaquin Niemann added to his growing reputation as he won LIV Golf Jeddah by four shots.

The 25-year-old won the Australian Open in December and has been invited to play at the Masters following three top-five finishes on the DP World Tour.

He won his second title in three LIV Tour starts this season, closing with a four-under 66 to finish on 17 under after three rounds in Saudi Arabia.

South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel were tied for second.

Schwartzel closed with a 68 but it was Oosthuizen, the 2010 Open champion, who was Niemann’s closest challenger before dropping a shot on the 16th.

He finished with back-to-back birdies to card a 67, but Niemann matched his scoring on the 17th and 18th holes to earn a comfortable victory.

The Chilean was asked if he felt like he was one of the world’s “hottest golfers” after recent performances.

“How is that possible? I’m like 100 in the world,” said Niemann, who is actually 72 in the latest world rankings but cannot earn ranking points for his performances in LIV tournaments.

He added: “I’m pretty proud of the way I have played during the whole week.”

American Bryson DeChambeau, the 2020 US Open winner, finished in fourth place on 12 under, while Spain’s reigning Masters champion Jon Rahm was one shot back in fifth.

Anthony Kim, the United States golfer who joined the tour last week after 12 years away from the professional game, finished last on 16 over par, 11 shots behind his nearest competitor.
