Yellow line service suspended after parts fall on the street

MRT yellow line bangkok one march 28 2024

The Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) Yellow Line service has been temporarily suspended following an incident where parts fell from the track, damaging three vehicles but fortunately causing no injuries. The Eastern Bangkok Monorail Co Ltd, the operator of the driverless train, reported that the conductor rail dropped between Kalantan and Si Udom stations, leading to the suspension of service at all stations as the company works to address the issue.

The incident occurred early in the morning, disrupting commuter travel during rush hour. Staff assisted passengers in evacuating from the affected cars, with some passengers taking the opportunity to document the uncommon experience of walking along the track.

This suspension is the second incident for the Yellow Line monorail system, with a previous mishap occurring when a wheel fell and struck a taxi below in January. Following that incident, all Yellow Line trains were required to replace their ball-bearings to ensure public safety.

Additionally, just a week prior to the Yellow Line incident, a section of conductor rail on the Pink Line monorail broke free and fell onto a street, damaging parked cars. The Pink Line operator is the Northern Bangkok Monorail Co, which, along with the Eastern Bangkok Monorail Co, are subsidiaries of BSR JV Consortium, composed of three prominent SET-listed companies: BTS Group Holdings, Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction, and Ratch Group.
