Mongolian Airlines closer to opening for US passengers

The first bilateral negotiations for an aviation transport deal between the US and Mongolia were concluded last month.

The national airline of Mongolia, MIAT Mongolian Airlines, appears to be getting ready to start launching passenger flights to the US. The airline started this service this month by submitting a document to the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Is MIAT planning to visit America?

Ishrion Aviation tweeted this week that MIAT Mongolian Airlines seemed to be getting closer to launching flights from Ulaanbaatar International Airport (UBN) to the US. To fly these potential future new routes, the flag carrier would probably deploy its future Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

The procedure is still in its beginning stages. The US and Mongolian governments must execute an air transport agreement before MIAT can begin operating flights to the US. The first bilateral air transport agreement negotiated by the two nations was completed last month with the signing of a Memorandum of Consultation (MOC) by both parties.

According to a statement from the US Department of State, this MOC acknowledged that the nations’ aeronautical authorities intend to apply the agreement in good faith and in exchange for reciprocity until it enters into force.

The agreement offers open chances for codesharing, open route rights, and unrestricted capacity and frequency of services. The MIAT plans go back to 2019.

MIAT For the first time in 2019, Mongolian Airlines declared its aim to begin operating flights to the US. With its upcoming Boeing 787 Dreamliner 9 planes, the carrier would be able to run direct flights to the United States.

Data from ch-aviation indicates that this aircraft, bearing the registration JU-1789, has not yet been delivered. It’s anticipated that the airline will get its widebody in June.

According to One Mile At A Time, the prevalent hypothesis is that MIAT would run between Ulaanbaatar and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). It is a 6,148-mile trip (nearly 9,900 kilometers, well within the range of the Dreamliner).

If launched, this wouldn’t be the first time MIAT had ever flown to the US. The company flew an all-cargo trip from Ulaanbaatar to the US in 2020 to deliver 60,000 pieces of personal protective equipment to the Navajo Nation.

Nine overseas locations are currently served by MIAT, including two long-haul route services to Frankfurt (FRA) and Istanbul (IST). Additionally, it travels to Phuket, Bangkok, Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo-Narita, Busan, Seoul Incheon, and Tokyo-Narita. The fleet of MIAT and current advancements

Six aircraft make up the current fleet of the national airline of Mongolia. Three Boeing 737-800s, one 757-200(PCF) for cargo flights, one 767-300, one Boeing 737 MAX 8, are all operated by MIAT (ER).

Turkish Airlines and MIAT started a codeshare partnership earlier this year. With the aid of this arrangement, the two carriers would be better able to utilize their individual networks, maximizing the prospects for passengers who would have a wider range of flight options between Turkey and Mongolia and beyond.

The CEO of MIAT Mongolian Airlines, Mr. Munhktamir, said:

“In the two companies’ cooperation, this marks a significant turning point. Customers of both airlines will benefit from the agreement’s increased choice and connection. Turkish Airlines is a significant airline with a sizable network on a global scale, and working with such a distinguished airline is a wonderful honor for us.
