Explore the new Yellow line MRT

For more than ten years, travelling to the Paradise Park mall to meet someone or visit the adjacent Vinyl Die Hards to look for records required taking a long moto taxi ride to BTS Udom Suk. There was no other choice than to take a long cab ride, which could take hours in evening traffic, especially with all the recent work.

All of that was transformed by a new choice last month.

What is its name? Monorail!

I can now confirm that despite what you may have heard, it really glides as softly as a cloud.

This last week, I started out early to fulfill a Lyle Lanley vision and take in the sights as I rode it from beginning to end.

Let’s address some crucial questions before we set out on the trains to catalog the sights and locations.

Where?

The MRT Yellow Line depicts a giant reverse C shape that travels southeast from Lat Phrao before turning southward along Srinakarin Road all the way to Khlong Samrong before reversing direction and traveling northwest along Thepharak Road to BTS Samrong. 30.4 kilometers are covered by its 23 stations.

How and when?

From 6 am till midnight, trains run. The price ranges from 15 to 45 THB. There are two park-and-ride options, one at MRT Lat Phrao (shared with the current MRT Blue Line for THB15 for two hours) and another at MRT Si Lam close to Central Bangna (THB5 per hour).

How frequently? Trains were arriving along the Samrong length every 8 minutes or so, according to a digital monitor. Trains arrived at 5-minute intervals through Lat Phrao from the north and west.

Is it reachable? The train can accommodate passengers using wheelchairs, and there looked to be elevators at the stations, however Manit Intharapim of Accessibility is Freedom observes that the train doesn’t fit flush with the platform and that it is a tight fit.

What is the speed? This real, authentic, electrified journey has the same sense of speed as an overhead BTS train. However, during the Lat Phrao length, you may hear the IGBT inverters of the Bombardier Innovia Monorail 300 turn up the volume, so hold on to anything. On board!

Although the free trips are no longer available, there is still a lot to see. This reporter spent three hours mapping out sites of interest along the route that were either challenging to get to in the past or were simply interesting.

The majority of the stations are dispersed throughout the city, away from the busy downtown area. The majority of the journey travels through identical residential structures, roadways, and vegetation.

Samrong

If you reside in the city, it’s likely that you’ll travel to Samrong on the BTS Sukhumvit Line (Light Green) to start your monorail trip. Consider taking the about ten-minute stroll to one of the local warehouses selling used items from Japan before going to the MRT concourse.

Thippawan

Coming down at MRT Thippawan, there is a novelty to check out, the very deserted and somewhat run-down Palm Island Mall, immediately north of the station. What was once a quiet neighborhood shopping center is now very quiet, with many stores closing.

The Dan Samrong Municipality Park is a very well-liked green spot for joggers and bikers a little further north. This can offer a welcome change of view if you’re tired of the typical city parks. It starts at 3:30.

The Pha Si

The following stop puts us not far from the Underdog Microbrewery. With our new monorail paradigm, the battle to reach this craft beer paradise is a thing of the past. It boasts a wide selection of craft beers on draft that you may sample among a bustling group of commuters and after-work drinkers.

Si Dan

Will the supermarket close before you get home? The Jas Urban Srinagarindra community mall is open twenty-four hours a day.

Want to take a longer vacation from riding the monorails? To replenish your energy for the journey, order refreshments at the TasteBud cafe.

Bearing Si

Tennis enthusiasts can stop by Bearing 68 Tennis, which has four courts and offers kids’ summer sessions.

La Salle, Si

The monorail provides an additional means of transportation for parents and students to go to Bangkok Pattana School, and travelers and foodies may get their fix at MRT Si La Salle. Noodles, braised meat, and hot, grilled cuisine are all sold at Racha Rod Nuea Toon. La Maison by Chef Billy, Sushi Dan, and Flavours of India, which is beside the station, all provide international cuisine.

Si Lam

The Pororo Aqua Park water park in Central Bangna is a great place for kids to play. You can choose from a wide variety of buds and bongs at the Space Time Bangna dispensary whether you want to dive deeper or float above the clouds.

For those seeking a cardio routine other than the monotonous gym treadmill, the adjacent Rock Domain sells climbing equipment. This is ascending in the most literal sense.

Nine Suan Luang Rama

This reporter considered this to be the most significant stop. The largest public park in Bangkok can now be reached from here, together with Seacon Square and Paradise Park. The Srinagarindra Train Night Market, where you may eat meals and shop for clothing and accessories, is also close by. You may buy bongs and pipes nearby at the original stoner retailer Bong Party. Music lovers and record collectors can cross Paradise Park to Vinyl Die Hards to purchase used recordings.

Hua Mak

Three stops from Suvarnabhumi International Airport are on the Airport Rail Link Hua Mak, which is connected to MRT Hua Mak by continuing north a few stops.

In Bang Kapi

The Mall Bangkapi is easily accessible from this station for Bangkok mall completists. Today, let’s visit The Mall!

Thai Mahat

Bend a bow at the adjacent ArcheryThai from this station. After shooting a few quivers, proceed to the Mahadthai Night Market.

71 Lat Phrao

You may walk to a number of coffee shops, including one that specializes in card and board games. A quick ride or a long grind will get skaters to FLicK SkatePark in time to shred.

In Lat Phrao

We arrived at the other side. Tourists were still taking pictures and films of the new station sign at the opposite Yellow Line terminal when I went there. Others waited to board the returning monorail as it changed tracks. Had sick of floating around like a cloud? The MRT Blue Line is connected to the platform.

Travel safely!
