The first 10 minutes are at risk of accidents during rain

The Ministry of Public Health is concerned about the increased risk of accidents on the roads during the rainy season at the News Field, Saturday to Sunday. They advise the public to check their vehicle’s condition before traveling to help reduce the risk of accidents.

The Emergency Public Health Division reports frequent road accidents, particularly during rainy periods. Many areas continue to experience heavy rainfall, affecting driving visibility and creating slippery road conditions. This is especially problematic within the first 10 minutes of rain, as the rainwater washes away oil residues and dust on the road surface. This can lead to skidding and loss of control, resulting in accidents. Several incidents have led to injuries requiring hospitalization, and some have even resulted in fatalities.

Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, emphasizes safe driving practices, such as reducing speed below normal levels and adjusting speed appropriately, using low beams, adjusting wiper speed according to rain intensity, and maintaining visibility by keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front (at least 10-15 meters) to ensure sufficient braking distance. It’s also important to avoid overtaking.

In cases of skidding or hydroplaning, it’s recommended to use lower gears and gently brake to reduce speed before applying the brakes to come to a stop. Additionally, when encountering flooded roads, it’s advised to assess the situation first. If the water level is higher than the car door, it’s best to find an alternative route instead.
