Bangkok’s Pink Line monorail is gearing up for some exciting updates! If you’re in the city this June, you can hop on the new branch to Mueang Thong Thani for free during its test run before full service kicks off on July 19.
Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit announced that the 3-km extension from Si Rat Station to Mueang Thong Thani will start trial operations in late June, giving passengers a chance to ride at no cost. Once it officially opens, fares will range from 15 to 22 baht. The line is operated by Northern Bangkok Monorail Co. in partnership with BTS Skytrain and is owned by the Bangkok Rapid Transit Authority.
The new Mueang Thong Thani Station is a game-changer for concertgoers, exhibition attendees, and sports fans, providing direct access to major venues in the area. The entire Pink Line itself stretches 34.5 km with 30 stations, linking Nonthaburi Civic Centre in Pak Kret to Min Buri in eastern Bangkok. It also connects seamlessly with other transit lines, making commuting across the city much easier.
Another 2.8-km extension from Si Rat Station to Muang Thong Thani is also in the works. Free test rides are planned for June 2025, with full service set to launch a month later.
Meanwhile, over in Phuket, officials are eyeing a monorail system to help ease the island’s worsening traffic. Governor Sophon Suwannarat proposed the project last year as an alternative to the stalled light rail plan. It’s now on the table for Transport Minister Suriya’s consideration.
As for the Pink Line’s main route, it runs along Highway 304, covering Chaeng Wattana and Ram Inthra roads. Construction kicked off in 2017, with trial runs beginning in November 2023 and full commercial service launching on December 31, 2023. Thanks to the monorail, the trip between Khae Rai and Min Buri now takes under an hour—cutting travel time by more than half!
