Malaysians Advised to Avoid Nighttime Outings in Southern Thailand Amid Rising Attacks

Malaysian tourists visiting southern Thailand have been urged by the Malaysian Consul General in Songkhla to avoid going out at night following recent attacks by Muslim separatists in the region.

Ahmad Fahmi Ahmad Sarkawi, the Consul General, informed The New Straits Times that most of the recent violence and shootings in the provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat have occurred during nighttime hours.

“While we cannot stop Malaysians from traveling for urgent matters, we strongly advise caution and recommend avoiding nighttime outings, as the majority of attacks happen during this time,” he said.

Ahmad Fahmi explained that many Malaysians visiting these provinces typically go out at night for activities such as shopping or breaking their fast during Ramadan. The violence in these provinces started before Ramadan but has escalated during the fasting month.

In light of these developments, the Consulate General is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to assist in emergencies. This advisory follows a bomb explosion on Saturday night outside the Sungai Golok district office in Narathiwat, which killed two police volunteers and injured 12 others. The attack, which occurred an hour after Muslims had broken their fast, was preceded by gunfire and took place near the Big C shopping center, a popular spot for Malaysian visitors along the Sungai Golok-Sungai Padi road.

The Consulate General has urged Malaysians to contact the office for the latest updates or further assistance regarding the situation.
