A tragic motorcycle accident in Songkhla province over the weekend resulted in a Thai woman losing her left hand. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, March 15, was captured on CCTV and later circulated on Thai social media.
The footage shows 55-year-old Sudarat “Taeng” Waranakhon riding as a passenger on a motorcycle driven by her male relative. Her shirt can be seen fluttering in the wind before becoming entangled in the motorcycle’s rear wheel, pulling her off the vehicle.
The force of the accident severed Taeng’s hand and wrist, leaving her severely injured. Witnesses immediately called for emergency assistance. Rescuers arrived promptly, administered first aid, and transported her to Hat Yai Hospital. Despite medical efforts, doctors were unable to reattach her hand, as it was too badly damaged in the accident.
Taeng is now in stable condition but remains hospitalized for further treatment. She has accepted her loss with remarkable resilience but is deeply concerned about covering her medical expenses. As someone who makes a living collecting and selling recyclable materials, she worries that the cost of treatment might exceed what state welfare covers. The total medical expenses are yet to be determined, as she still requires ongoing care and physical therapy.
A similar accident occurred in September last year when a young boy’s loose rain poncho was pulled into a motorcycle wheel on a rainy day. The incident resulted in a broken arm, though no further updates on his condition were made public.
