Purple Line Southern Extension 53% Complete, Says MRTA
BANGKOK, THAILAND – The southern extension of the MRT Purple Line, connecting Tao Poon to Rat Burana, has reached 53.4% completion, according to an update from the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA).
The announcement was made by MRTA chairman Montri Dechasakulkorn following a safety inspection of the project’s fifth contract section, prompted by a recent earthquake that shook Bangkok.
🚆 Project Overview
- Total length: 23.63 kilometers
- Underground: 14.29 km
- Elevated: 9.34 km
- Fifth contract zone: Covers elevated tracks and stations from Dao Khanong to Khru Nai, including the train depot and car park near Rat Burana canal.
🔍 Safety First, Post-Quake Precautions
The inspection focused on structural safety and earthquake resilience, especially for critical components like:
- Launching gantries
- Scaffolding
- Pier and viaduct segments
- Suspended cross beams
“With both underground and elevated sections, safety is our top priority,” Mr. Montri emphasized. He has instructed the MRTA to strictly enforce international construction standards, particularly those designed to help infrastructure withstand seismic vibrations.
🌱 Environmental Measures Stepped Up
In addition to structural safety, the MRTA is also ramping up environmental controls, particularly around:
- PM2.5 dust pollution
- Machinery emissions
Contractors have been directed to:
- Spray water to suppress dust
- Ensure all equipment meets environmental standards
- Minimize dust-generating activities
🛠️ Current Status
As of the end of March 2025, the overall project stands at 53.4% completion, with work steadily advancing on both tunnel and elevated sections.
The Purple Line extension is expected to significantly improve public transport access in Bangkok’s west and southern districts, easing congestion and reducing travel time across the city.
