30 More Die in Songkran Accidents as Danger Shifts to Local Roads

BANGKOK — April 13, 2025 — Road accidents during Thailand’s Songkran holiday claimed 30 lives and injured 257 people on Saturday, the second day of the week-long travel period marking the traditional Thai New Year, according to the Road Safety Operation Centre.

The centre reported 248 accidents across the country on Saturday, bringing the two-day total to 459 accidents, with 60 fatalities and 458 injuries recorded so far.

Motorcycles remained the most hazardous mode of transport, involved in 86% of incidents, with speeding and drunk driving identified as the leading causes of the crashes.

Bangkok recorded the highest death toll on Saturday with nine fatalities, followed by Lamphun with three. The majority of accidents occurred on highways, as holiday travellers continued their journeys to hometowns and vacation spots.

Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong, speaking at a press conference, warned that the focus of accidents is expected to shift from highways to local roads, as people begin celebrating Songkran festivities in their communities and tourist destinations.

Highway police anticipate that the return journey for many will begin on Tuesday, with traffic into Bangkok peaking on Wednesday. However, officials expect that some vacationers may extend their break by taking Thursday and Friday off, delaying their return until the following weekend.

Authorities are urging all road users to remain vigilant and follow safe driving practices throughout the remaining days of the Songkran period to reduce further casualties.
