Tragic Van-Truck Collision in Surat Thani Claims Three Lives, Including Infant
SURAT THANI — A family’s journey home ended in tragedy when their van collided with a 10-wheeler truck just 30 kilometers from their destination, killing three people — including a one-year-old girl — and injuring four others.
The fatal crash occurred on May 18 along Asian Highway 41, in the southbound lane near a Volvo car repair center in the Khlong Sai subdistrict of Tha Chang district. Officers from Tha Chang Police Station responded to the scene, along with emergency teams from Tha Chang and Phunphin rescue units, as well as ambulances from Tha Chang and Tha Rong Chang hospitals.
The collision happened on a detour from the highway’s main route. Officials arriving at the scene found a 10-wheeler Isuzu truck with minor damage to its rear and a small tear in its tarpaulin-covered cargo bay. Behind it, a Toyota Commuter van was found with severe front-end damage.
Initial reports confirmed that three van passengers were critically injured, and one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Four individuals were transported to Tha Chang Hospital, where the one-year-old girl later died. A third victim succumbed to injuries at Tha Rong Chang Hospital, bringing the death toll to three.
According to preliminary investigations, the van was carrying a family of seven — relatives returning from Bangkok to their home in Khao Hua Khwai, Phunphin district. The accident occurred as the truck slowed down on a detour and the van was unable to brake in time, resulting in the fatal rear-end collision.
Tha Chang Police have launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
In a separate incident, a collision in Kanchanaburi province claimed the lives of two Myanmar women and left another critically injured when a pickup truck crashed into a motorcycle traveling against traffic.
