Popular Turkish Ice Cream Seller Among Eight Arrested on Khao San Road for Working Illegally

BANGKOK — A Turkish ice cream vendor known for his theatrical serving style was among eight foreign nationals arrested during an early morning immigration sweep on Bangkok’s Khao San and Rambuttri Roads, authorities confirmed on May 21.

The operation, led by Police Lieutenant Colonel Suriya Phuangsombat of Immigration Bureau 1 and officers from Chana Songkhram Police Station, targeted tourist-heavy nightlife areas suspected of employing undocumented foreign workers. It was conducted under the directive of Immigration Bureau Commissioner Police Lieutenant General Phanumas Boonyalak.

Among those detained was Mr. Muhamet, a 27-year-old Turkish national who had become a familiar face to tourists for his playful Turkish ice cream performances. Officials said he was operating on a tourist visa without a valid work permit, a violation of Thai labor laws.

Muhamet reportedly earned 2,000–3,000 baht per day and had been working in the area for about a month. His Thai employer told authorities he was being paid 50,000 baht per month.

In addition to Muhamet, immigration officers apprehended seven Myanmar nationals, most of whom were selling food and beverages, including roti, kebabs, ice cream, and fruit juice. Four of the individuals were unable to present passports and are suspected of having illegally entered the country.

Authorities say the crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to regulate illegal labor in popular tourist areas and protect the integrity of Thailand’s immigration system. Further legal proceedings are underway for those arrested.
