Russian Tourist Dies After Cannabis-Induced Hallucinations in Pattaya

Chon Buri, May 22 — A 27-year-old Russian tourist died after falling from the ninth floor of a condominium in Pattaya’s Jomtien area, in what police believe was a cannabis-induced psychotic episode.

The incident occurred on Wednesday and was reported by security personnel at the condominium, according to Pol Lt Kriangkrai Kaewpipop, sub-inspector of the Dongtan sub-branch of Pattaya Police Station.

The victim, identified only as Mikhail, was found with fatal injuries on the ground below the building. His body was covered by police pending a forensic examination and has since been sent for autopsy to confirm the exact cause of death.

A search of Mikhail’s room revealed cannabis and smoking equipment, but no evidence of forced entry or foul play. Investigators say there were no signs of theft or violence.

According to a security guard on duty, Mikhail appeared paranoid and distressed in the hours before his death. He was reportedly shouting incoherently about being chased by a ghost and was seen running frantically up and down the building in a panic.

Moments before the fall, several residents witnessed the man behaving erratically on the upper floors. Shortly afterward, they saw him fall from the ninth floor and notified security, who alerted authorities.

Police suspect that hallucinations caused by cannabis consumption may have triggered a psychotic episode, leading Mikhail to jump. While recreational cannabis use is decriminalized in Thailand, authorities have cautioned against misuse, particularly among tourists unfamiliar with its potency or effects.

The case remains under investigation pending the results of the autopsy.
