Bangkok and Google Launch AI-Powered “Project Green Light” to Tackle Traffic Woes
Bangkok, May 25 — In a bold move to address its chronic traffic congestion, Bangkok has partnered with Google to roll out Project Green Light, an AI-driven initiative that optimizes traffic signal timings using real-time data from Google Maps.
Launched in February 2025, the pilot phase has already covered over 50 intersections across the city. By dynamically adjusting traffic light cycles based on live traffic flow and driver behavior, the system has delivered promising early results:
- 🚗 30% reduction in vehicle stoppage time
- 🌱 10% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions
The initiative is part of a broader effort by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to promote sustainable urban mobility, improve air quality, and enhance commuter experience.
Bangkok joins 17 other global cities selected by Google for this groundbreaking program aimed at reducing urban gridlock and environmental impact through smarter, data-driven traffic management.
“This collaboration reflects Bangkok’s commitment to innovation and sustainability,” a BMA spokesperson said. “Project Green Light is more than a traffic solution—it’s a step toward a smarter, greener city.”
With early success reported, the BMA plans to expand Project Green Light to additional intersections in the coming months, aligning with long-term goals to improve urban livability and transport efficiency for residents and visitors alike.
