Bangkok Taxi Crackdown Nets 76 Drivers for Overcharging and Ride Refusals

BANGKOK, Thailand – May 27, 2025

Bangkok’s tourist police have arrested 76 taxi drivers in a major crackdown on dishonest practices, targeting those who refuse passengers, avoid using meters, or obstruct traffic in the city’s busy tourist zones.

Police Lieutenant General Saksira Pueak-am, Commander-in-Chief of the Tourist Police Bureau, ordered the sweep to restore confidence in the capital’s taxi services, especially for international visitors. The operation, led by Police Colonel Milin Phianchang of Tourist Police Division 1, was carried out in coordination with officers from Chana Songkhram, Phra Ratchawang, and Lumphini police stations.

The crackdown resulted in the arrest of 11 drivers for failing to use meters, five for refusing passengers, and 60 for illegal parking that disrupted traffic flow.

“This is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure tourists receive fair, safe, and reliable transportation,” said Colonel Milin. “We are sending a clear message that violations will not be tolerated.”

Police have called on tourists to report misconduct and have pledged to increase patrols and random checks throughout key tourist areas.

The enforcement campaign comes amid growing concerns over the reputation of Bangkok’s taxi services, which play a vital role in shaping the experience of millions of visitors to the Thai capital each year.
