What is Starlink?What is Starlink?

Starlink is a satellite internet constellation operated by Starlink Services, LLC, an international telecommunications provider and wholly owned subsidiary of the American aerospace company SpaceX. The network delivers high-speed, low-latency internet coverage across roughly 150 countries and territories, with ambitions to enable global mobile broadband connectivity, including services for aviation, maritime, and remote locations. Starlink has become a key contributor to SpaceX’s overall growth strategy.

SpaceX began deploying Starlink satellites in 2019. As of January 2026, the constellation includes more than 9,400 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), communicating with a network of ground stations. Starlink now accounts for about 65% of all active satellites in orbit. SpaceX plans to deploy nearly 12,000 satellites initially, with potential expansion to as many as 34,400. Subscriber numbers have grown rapidly, surpassing 1 million in December 2022, 4 million by September 2024, and 9 million by December 2025.

Starlink is increasingly used to provide in-flight Wi-Fi for commercial airlines, offering faster and more reliable internet connectivity than traditional satellite systems. Several airlines have adopted or announced plans to use Starlink to deliver free or enhanced broadband services to passengers, enabling streaming, video calls, and real-time connectivity during flights.

The Starlink satellite development facility in Redmond, Washington, supports research, development, manufacturing, and orbital operations. In 2018, SpaceX estimated that designing, building, and deploying the constellation would cost at least US$10 billion. Starlink generated approximately $1.4 billion in revenue in 2022, though it recorded a net loss. Revenue projections rose sharply thereafter, with expectations of $7.7 billion in 2024 and $11.8 billion in 2025. Financial filings in the Netherlands showed Starlink Satellite Services Corporation reported $2.7 billion in revenue in 2024 and a profit of $72 million.

Starlink has played a significant role in the Russo-Ukrainian War and operates under contracts with the United States Department of Defense. A military-focused version, known as Starshield, is designed specifically for government and defense applications. The technology has also been cited as a leading candidate for elements of the proposed U.S. “Golden Dome” missile defense system.

The rapid expansion of the constellation has raised concerns among astronomers regarding its impact on ground-based observations and increased orbital congestion. SpaceX has introduced measures to reduce satellite brightness and mitigate interference. Starlink satellites are equipped with Hall-effect thrusters that enable orbit raising, station-keeping, controlled de-orbiting at end of life, and autonomous collision avoidance using tracking data.
