Amnuay Viravan passed away from pneumonia on Tuesday afternoon.

From the 1960s until the 1990s, Amnuay’s political career lasted four decades.

At Wat That Thong in Bangkok’s Watthana neighborhood, funeral ceremonies will last seven days starting today (Wednesday).

People attending the funeral were asked to donate to the Ramathibodi Foundation rather than send wreaths.

On July 1, 1932, Amnuay was born in Bangkok. He attended Assumption College and later earned a bachelor’s in commerce from Chulalongkorn University, a master’s in business administration from the University of Michigan, and a doctorate in business administration from the University of Michigan.

Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn’s advisor, he started his political career in politics in 1963.

He later joined the National Legislative Assembly in 1973 and was appointed finance minister in 1980. In 1992, he was appointed deputy prime minister in the government of Chuan Leekpai.

Amnuay ran for office in the 1995 general election, rising to the positions of deputy prime minister and finance minister in 1996.

Following the 1997 financial crisis, which rocked Thailand, he resigned as finance minister, and Thanong Bidaya took over.

Amnuay founded the Nam Thai Party in 1994, but it was disbanded after four years. He served as both the Muan Chon Party’s and the New Aspiration Party’s vice leader.

He had also served as Asia Sermkij Leasing Plc’s honorary president in the past.

Takonkiet “Boy” Viravan, the CEO of the media business The One Enterprise, and Amornpimol Viravan, the couple’s two children, were born to Amnuay and Khunying Samornsri Viravan.
