Anucha Burapachaisri says total number of electric vehicles registered in Thailand increased

EV registrations increased to 8,522 in March, nearly doubling the 4,543 total for January, according to figures from the Land Transport Department.

Motorcycles (2,263) and vehicles (6,205) with little more than seven seats were the two types of EVs that saw the most registrations in March.

Anucha claimed that the increase was caused by both government incentives for EV purchasers and policies to encourage EV producers in breaking into the Thai market. Depending on the size of the battery, four-wheel EV buyers receive discounts ranging from 70,000 to 150,000 baht. A 18,000 baht subsidy is offered for the purchase of e-motorcycles.

Import taxes on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have been reduced for manufacturers by 20% for vehicles priced between 2 million and 7 million baht and by 40% for vehicles priced under 2 million baht. A 24-billion-baht subsidy program for the regional EV battery industry is one of the government’s other incentives.

The goal is to make Thailand an EV hub, with electric vehicles accounting for 30% of all automobile production by 2030 and combustion-engine vehicle sales altogether ceasing by 2035.

The Bangkok International Motor Show, which ran from March 22 to April 2, according to Anucha, boosted EV reservations. He added that March deliveries from producers like Tesla, BYD, and MG had helped registrations and expressed confidence that EV sales would increase.

According to Anucha, the government’s support of EVs will benefit Thailand in creating a sustainable economy that protects the environment.

“This is a crucial first step for Thailand toward a low-carbon society.”
