The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has developed an on-demand electric boat taxi service set to launch in July, coinciding with the expansion of the app-based motorcycle taxi-hailing service by Krung Thep Thanakom Co (KT), the BMA’s business arm. The boat taxi service is intended to integrate with Bangkok’s electric rail systems, public buses, and motorcycle taxi services, focusing on promoting tourism in the city.
KT’s managing director, Tharatporn Techakitkachorn, mentioned that the pilot phase will commence next month in Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem and its surrounding canals. Upon full implementation, the electric boat taxis will operate on key canals, including Khlong Lat Phrao. Passengers will have the convenience of using a dedicated app to hail these boats and will be charged based on the distance traveled.
KT is currently in discussions with electric boat manufacturers to finalize the design and pricing of the six- to ten-seat vessels planned for use. The initial trial service in July will involve two prototype boats.
Regarding the BMA’s motorcycle taxi app, currently undergoing trials in four Bangkok districts, it aims to connect around 5,000 registered taxi motorcycles and 90,000 individually licensed riders to the hailing system for its city-wide launch in July. Passengers will be able to easily request rides through the app with minimal effort.
While most motorcycle taxi services are limited to certain app-based delivery platforms, the BMA’s new hailing app will focus solely on motorcycle taxi services, offering coverage across most areas of Bangkok. Additionally, KT will ensure fair pricing regulations for the services provided.
