Boeing to Resume Certification Flight Tests for 777X

Boeing is set to resume flight testing of the 777X, with the first flight potentially scheduled for January 15, following a pause initiated in August 2024 after severed thrust links were discovered on all four test aircraft. None of the 777-9 test planes have flown since September 2024, with significant inactivity noted for several months.

The previously mentioned issue led to an immediate halt in flight tests while Boeing engineers investigated the root cause and planned corrective actions. Despite the setback, Boeing executives have expressed confidence in the aircraft’s potential. The 777-9’s entry-into-service date, originally slated for 2020, has been postponed to 2026, accompanied by a substantial pre-tax earnings charge of $2.6 billion due to these delays.

Prior to the thrust link issue, Boeing had made progress in certifying the 777X, securing Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) in July 2024, allowing them to conduct flight tests with FAA representatives onboard. The company aims to amend the existing Type Certificate to incorporate the 777-9, a derivative of the approved 777 model.
