Thai Airports Get Ready for Increased Traffic During Chinese New Year

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has instructed Airports of Thailand (AoT) to prepare for an influx of tourists during the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday.

Mr. Suriya indicated that approximately 4 million foreign arrivals are anticipated during the 10-day holiday period, which spans from January 24 to February 2, with Chinese New Year falling on January 29. Among these arrivals, around 770,000 are expected to come from China, representing a 22.6% increase compared to the same period last year.

This Lunar New Year period will serve as a significant test of Thailand’s ability to reassure Chinese visitors regarding their safety. Concerns arose following the widely publicized abduction of a Chinese actor in Thailand by a Myanmar-based scam group, which reportedly led to numerous tour cancellations.

Mr. Suriya has requested that all agencies ensure smooth travel experiences, focusing particularly on safety and timely services, leveraging modern technology. He urged AoT to collaborate with other agencies to boost manpower to assist both inbound and outbound passengers across all platforms.

AoT president Kirati Kijmanawat confirmed the organization’s readiness to manage the expected increase in flight and passenger volumes at its six international airports: Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai, Phuket, and Hat Yai. They anticipate a total of 24,599 flights, averaging 2,460 flights per day, during this period, with overall international passenger numbers projected to reach 4.03 million, or about 403,182 passengers per day.
