Bangkok to Host 2026 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Historic Return Since 1991

Thailand will welcome more than 15,000 delegates from 191 countries to Bangkok in October as it hosts the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings for the first time since 1991, a milestone the Finance Ministry says will showcase the country's economic readiness on a global stage.

Thailand Prepares to Host "Olympics of Finance" at Renovated Bangkok Venue

The Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Thailand have jointly confirmed the country's readiness to host the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group, a gathering often described as the "Olympics of Finance." The event will run from October 12 to 18 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok, drawing more than 15,000 delegates from 191 countries, including policymakers, economists, government officials and private sector executives.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas said hosting the summit is a major opportunity to deliver tangible benefits to Thailand, stimulating the economy while raising the country's global credibility. Thailand last hosted the meetings in 1991, and officials say the venue, originally built for that event, has since undergone a full renovation reflecting the broader transformation of Bangkok into a modern, connected economy.

Officials See a Rare Platform to Showcase Economic Resilience

Thailand's host theme, "Thailand's New Horizons: Empowering People, Building Resilience," is built around four pillars: digital and AI transformation, resilience in a fragmented world, a new financial architecture for climate adaptation, and preparing for demographic change and the longevity economy. The Finance Ministry says the plan aligns with the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, a development framework emphasising balance and sustainability.

Vinit Visessuvanapoom, director-general of the Fiscal Policy Office and ministry spokesman, said the meetings would look very different from Thailand's first turn as host 35 years ago, when news coverage was limited by equipment and traditional media channels. This time, developments can be shared instantly through mobile phones and global media networks, giving Thailand a chance to project its economic direction to a worldwide audience in real time. Preparations are already rated "Grade A" by the ministry, with liaison officers being trained from the Finance Ministry, the Bank of Thailand and student volunteer groups to support the thousands of visiting delegates.
