Exciting Developments in the Eastern Corridor's High-Speed Railway Project

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has pledged to drive forward a high-speed railway initiative connecting three major airports to boost the success of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). Anticipating positive developments, he intends to revive the long-delayed railway project in the coming month.

During a recent visit to U-Tapao airport in Ban Chang district of the eastern province, one of the airports slated for the high-speed railway link, the prime minister expressed strong support for the 224-billion-baht project. Originally anticipated to commence operations this year, the project has faced significant delays, prompting the prime minister’s intervention to expedite its progress.

Mr. Srettha emphasized the critical importance of the project, highlighting its impact on instilling confidence in the private sector and securing investments in the EEC. Emphasizing its economic significance, he stressed the necessity of completing the project promptly to drive growth and development in the region.

Despite setbacks caused by factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and shifting consumer behavior, efforts are underway to negotiate terms for the project’s fair and efficient execution. The consortium responsible for constructing the rail system, led by the Charoen Pokphand Group, has engaged in discussions with relevant authorities to address contractual adjustments and ensure project completion.

Scheduled for commercial launch in 2024, the high-speed railway linking Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports in Greater Bangkok to U-Tapao airport in Rayong forms a crucial component of the government’s strategic plans to bolster the EEC as a hub for high-tech investments and economic growth.
