Despite a recent tragedy involving six individuals in Bangkok, the decision by Thailand to extend visa-free stays for residents of Hong Kong is expected to enhance business relationships and draw more visitors from the financial hub, industry experts have stated.
On Wednesday, they emphasized that the unfortunate event would not dissuade people from traveling to the country.
Anthony Lam Sai-ho, the Executive Deputy Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, viewed the visa extension positively, citing its benefits to Hong Kong businesses operating in Thailand.
Following Thailand’s announcement on Monday to extend visa-free entry from 30 to 60 days for 93 countries and regions, including Hong Kong, the move aims to bolster tourism.
Lam noted that many members with manufacturing facilities in Thailand rely on the extended visa duration for client meetings, machinery inspections, and training sessions.
Additionally, Tiffie Cheung Hoi-tung, a digital marketing professional, highlighted how the visa extension facilitates her work and travel arrangements in Thailand, particularly during her remote working experiences in the country.
The longer stay period is viewed as advantageous for increased immersion, cost-effectiveness, and exploration opportunities around Thailand, according to Roger Hu Wai-chung, a longtime resident and travel writer.
The measure is anticipated to strengthen ties and promote tourism, as noted by the Hong Kong Immigration Department, aligning with Thailand’s tourism success during the first five months of 2024.
Despite concerns over a recent incident at a prominent hotel in Bangkok, wherein six individuals were tragically involved, industry experts reassured the public of safety and emphasized the isolated nature of the event, with tourism activities largely unaffected.
Steve Huen Kwok-chuen, the Executive Director of travel agency EGL Tours, affirmed minimal disruption to ongoing tour groups in Bangkok following the incident, emphasizing customer understanding regarding the situation.
