Flights in Hanoi come to a halt as pollution worsens

Hanoi Airport Bangkok one Feb 3 2024

Flights to and from Hanoi’s international airport in Vietnam have been delayed or diverted due to heavy fog and worsening air pollution, according to an airport official. The levels of hazardous small particles known as PM2.5 in the air reached an extreme high of 257 microgrammes per cubic meter, as reported by Air Visual, an independent air quality index monitor.

As a result, all incoming flights are being redirected to other cities such as Haiphong or Danang, and no takeoffs are currently permitted. Approximately 100 flights have been affected, according to state media. In response to the situation, Vietjet, a budget airline in Vietnam, has diverted some flights to Haiphong City.

The air pollution in Hanoi has consistently ranked among the highest in the world, leading health authorities to advise people to wear masks and limit their time outdoors.
