Hat Yai has announced its ambition to become a medical and wellness hub in the southern region of Thailand.
Sitthisak Tonmongkol, secretary-general of the Hat Yai Economic Forum (HEF), revealed that several development initiatives will be launched to enhance the southern city.
One of the key projects aims to transform Hat Yai into a walkable city, ensuring that residents can easily, safely, and conveniently access commercial areas and public spaces on foot. This initiative is expected to reduce reliance on private vehicles and alleviate traffic congestion.
Mr. Sitthisak mentioned that less developed areas of the city could be revitalized under a “smart city” concept, with plans to focus on the vicinity of the Khlong Toei canal.
Once completed, the canal will feature clean water and safe, attractive walking paths on both sides, with activity zones established along the waterway to create a new local attraction.
He also noted that Hat Yai embraced the UNESCO concept of a “learning city” in 2021, with the historic commercial area designated as part of the Hat Yai Living Museum project. This initiative will enable visitors to explore the city’s culture and history through walking tours and various activities.
Additionally, there are plans to establish Hat Yai as a medical and wellness hub, with platforms created for gathering opinions and suggestions regarding development plans.
Mr. Sitthisak indicated that a project is currently underway to acquire land for a second Hat Yai Hospital, which will be constructed on a 100-rai plot of donated land. This new hospital will operate under the “hospital-oriented development (HOD)” concept and will be accessible to patients from the seven southernmost provinces.
