Defense Talks Held Amid Broader Trade Negotiations
Elbridge Colby, the United States Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, held talks with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul at Government House in Bangkok during his first official visit to Thailand. The meeting focused on strengthening the two countries' longstanding alliance, with discussions covering expanded defence cooperation, efforts to tackle transnational crime, and regional security issues including tensions along the Thailand-Cambodia border.
Anutin told the senior US defense official that Thailand would not use its defence cooperation with Washington as a bargaining chip in ongoing trade negotiations, even as both sides seek to finalise a reciprocal trade deal. The visit followed earlier talks between Thai and US officials in July, when Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow to discuss security, economic and regional matters.
Alliance Spans Nearly Two Centuries
Thailand and the United States describe their relationship as one of the oldest alliances in Asia, dating back roughly 193 years, and officials from both countries used the visit to emphasise its continued relevance amid shifting regional dynamics. Thai officials said they hoped for a swift resolution to the countries' trade talks while continuing to expand defence and security cooperation in parallel.
The visit forms part of a broader pattern of high-level US engagement with Thailand this year, as Washington seeks to reinforce its strategic presence in Southeast Asia. Thai officials reiterated that security and trade discussions would continue to be handled through separate channels, even as both governments look to deepen cooperation across multiple fronts.
