Lufthansa A380 back after 3 years

On June 1, 2023, Lufthansa’s first commercial flight with the Airbus A380 in three years took off.

The D-AIMK-registered aircraft is now in the air, operating flight LH424 between Munich Airport (MUC) and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).

After being sidelined for more than three years during the COVID-19 epidemic due to a lack of demand for air travel and the aircraft’s high operating expenses, the Airbus A380 was finally reintroduced to the German airline’s fleet.  Flightradar24.com information indicates that the plane departed MUC at 4:01 PM local time (UTC +2) and is scheduled to arrive at BOS at 5:54 PM local time (UTC -5).

The Airbus A380 has been flying training and familiarization flights over the past two weeks, stopping in at a number of places around Europe as pilots re-familiarized themselves with the aircraft.

In response to the increase in demand for travel during the pandemic, Lufthansa has unground the Airbus A380, joining a number of other airlines that have previously used the model.

A total of at least six A380s might re-join the carrier’s fleet by 2024, despite the German airline group’s repeated assertion that the aircraft has no long-term future at the airline.

The airline is currently debating whether to reactivate two of the type, while the other four will remain based at MUC for the ensuing months. The airline with its base at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) has planned a number of A380-equipped flights from MUC to locations like Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK), BOS, and New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
