Minister applauds his deputy’s son-in-law’s arrest

Minister applauds his deputy's son-in-law's arrest

Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul praised police and anti-corruption officers for the arrests of the son-in-law of Deputy Interior Minister Chada Thaised and four other people charged with extortion and bribery in Uthai Thani province yesterday (Tuesday).

No one is above the law, regardless of their political connections, he claimed, as evidenced by the arrests of the three municipal leaders and the two ordinary citizens.

Veerachart Rassamee, the mayor of the Taluk Do sub-district and Chada’s son-in-law, was named as one of the suspects. The vice major and the municipality’s head engineer are the other two municipal representatives.

“He’s just a son-in-law, Veerachai. The dowry was simply given to the father-in-law (Chada). Anutin offered his opinion on the situation, saying “He can’t control his son-in-law’s actions.”

Anutin has tasked Chada with taking out important figures who resemble the Mafia around the nation.

In a crackdown on a bribery ring, which is allegedly demanding bribes from a group of contractors, police and anti-corruption authorities from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) raided eight locations in Uthai Thani yesterday.

A anonymous caller instructed the contractors to withdraw their bids after warning them that they might be “obstructed” if they were awarded the contract for the installation of a tap water system in the towns of Hat Thanong and Taluk Do.

When the contractors won the bid, they were unable to complete the work since no construction supply stores in the province would cooperate with them. Some of the suspects then contacted them and demanded a million baht in bribes from them in order for them to fulfill the contract; however, the amount was eventually reduced to 600,000 baht.

Eventually, the contractors complained to the NACC, the PACC, and the police’s anti-corruption unit, who opened an investigation that resulted to yesterday’s arrests of the five accused.
