Minister reconsiders insurance for tourist

Minister reconsiders need for visitor insurance, citing lower healthcare expenses. The Tourism and Sports Ministry in Thailand has questioned the necessity of a universal insurance plan for tourists, as previous healthcare compensation sums were significantly lower than the anticipated costs of such a comprehensive insurance scheme.

The ministry instead proposed a budget of 50 million baht from the central budget to assist foreign tourists, with coverage up to 500,000 baht per person for injuries and 1 million baht per person in case of death. The government also decided to postpone the implementation of a 300-baht tourism fee due to potential negative effects on tourism sentiment.
