The Ministry of Transport has introduced a PM2.5 reduction initiative, encouraging the registration of buses and trucks on the “Green List” to support Bangkok’s Low Emission Zone (LEZ) program.

Deputy Transport Minister Mallika Jiraphanwanich announced these measures to address air pollution, particularly fine particulate matter (PM2.5), as part of the government’s efforts to enhance public health and environmental quality.

The initiative promotes the adoption of cleaner vehicles, such as Euro 5 and electric buses (EVs), by replacing older fleets and reducing emissions of black smoke and PM2.5 from the transport sector.

The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has been directed to enforce laws on vehicle emissions nationwide and support Bangkok’s LEZ policy by restricting high-polluting vehicles from entering key areas.

Operators are encouraged to participate in the “Green List” program, which emphasizes regular vehicle maintenance, including oil changes and air filter replacements, to foster a safer, more sustainable transportation system and improve air quality.

According to DLT Director-General Sorapong Paitoonphong, ongoing PM2.5 reduction efforts include tax incentives for EV adoption, roadside smoke inspections, and collaboration with Bangkok authorities to monitor vehicle inspection centers.

Bangkok aims to establish LEZs across all 50 districts, with bans on six-wheeled or larger vehicles during severe pollution episodes, except for those meeting EV, NGV, or Euro 5–6 standards, or registered under the Green List.

Operators are advised to maintain vehicles properly by regularly changing oil, cleaning air filters, performing routine engine checks, adjusting fuel injectors, maintaining fuel systems, and covering open truck loads to prevent debris, odours, and dust emissions.

Registration for the Green List is open via QR code or online at https://lez.bangkok.go.th until March 31 next year.

The DLT assured that strict enforcement will continue with inspectors nationwide measuring vehicle exhaust smoke, complemented by comprehensive government policies to tackle PM2.5 pollution effectively.
