Ministry to probe gasohol shortage

Gasohol Bangkok one

The Energy Ministry has promised to take action against oil retailers who have illegally stockpiled fuel. This comes after complaints were made about petrol stations running out of gasohol, following a state policy to lower the prices of gasohol 91 and gasohol 95.

Petrol stations started reducing the price of gasohol 91 by 2.5 baht a litre and gasohol 95 by 1 baht a litre on November 7. However, many petrol stations reportedly sold out of these fuels within a few hours, leading to complaints from motorists.

The ministry spokesperson, Pongpol Yodmuangcharoen, stated that officials are investigating the matter to determine whether any illegal activities, such as fuel hoarding, took place. The ministry has assigned officials to closely monitor gasohol sales at petrol stations nationwide.

If oil retailers are found guilty of breaking the law, they can face fines of up to 140,000 baht or a maximum jail term of seven years. Motorists who suspect any unusual fuel selling practices can report their concerns to the Department of Energy Business.

In October, the cabinet decided to lower the prices of gasohol 91 and gasohol 95 by reducing excise taxes and implementing a price subsidy program. Gasohol, also known as gasohol E10, is a blend of gasoline and 10% ethanol. The scheme for discounted prices will continue until January 31 next year.

The Energy Ministry is taking these actions to address the issue of fuel shortages and ensure fair and transparent practices in the oil retail industry.
