More staff and auto gates to speed up in Suvarnabhumi

suvarnabhumi bangkok one Feb 26 2024

Additional staff are being rostered and more automatic processing gates are being installed in response to the prime minister’s concerns about slow passenger queues at Suvarnabhumi airport. Kerati Kijmanawat, the president of Airports of Thailand (AoT), provided this assurance following an inspection of the airport with Pol Maj Gen Choengron Rimpadee, commander of Immigration Division 2.

Responding to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s criticism of the lengthy and sluggish immigration queues during a surprise visit, Mr. Kerati acknowledged the issue. He mentioned that passengers were spending approximately one hour and ten minutes to complete immigration procedures during peak hours, with an average of 46 minutes. With 5,000-6,000 passengers per hour during peak times, AoT aims to reduce wait times to 30 minutes.

To address these concerns, AoT plans to recruit 800 new staff members for support and assistance by March 30. Immigration police have been urged to ensure all immigration booths are adequately staffed during busy periods. Immigration Division 2 is set to assign 200 new officers to Suvarnabhumi airport on March 1 and an additional 400 by year-end.

By July 15, there will be 80 more automatic channels for both incoming and outgoing passengers alongside enhanced software for passport checks. The installation of twenty new gates is scheduled for completion by June 15. Advanced technology will streamline power bank examinations and eliminate the need for passengers to remove their shoes.

Moreover, a Common Use Passenger Processing System has been implemented on the fourth floor of the passenger terminal, allowing travelers to independently check-in and load luggage. AoT has also requested 24 airlines to commence check-in services four hours prior to departure times.

Mr. Kerati stated that by 2027, AoT plans to expand the eastern section of the passenger terminal.
