Thailand may increase minimum wages for the second time this year

Minimum wage bangkok one Feb 27 2024

The wage committee in Thailand is currently reassessing the daily minimum wage following a 2.37% increase earlier in the year, which was deemed insufficient by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, especially for workers in southern regions. To facilitate this reassessment, two sub-panels have been established within the committee, consisting of government, employer, and employee representatives. Various factors such as inflation, GDP growth, and labor productivity are being taken into account, with last year’s inflation rate standing at 1.23% and revised GDP forecasts for 2023 and 2024 at 1.9% and 2.7%, respectively.

EconThai has indicated that while the new minimum wage may not universally reach 400 baht per day, certain professions and regions could witness this increase. This aligns with the proposal from the Pheu Thai Party for a gradual increment to 600 baht by 2027, commencing with 400 baht this year. Tanit Sorat, the vice-chairman of EconThai, anticipates that migrant workers would benefit significantly from the suggested wage adjustment to 400 baht daily, particularly since many Thai workers already earn beyond this threshold.
