Nissan North America is recalling 19,077 LEAF electric vehicles in the US over a potential fire hazard linked to Level 3 quick charging, the NHTSA announced Friday.
The recall covers certain 2021–2022 LEAF models with Level 3 charging ports. Nissan estimates about 1% of these vehicles—roughly 191 units—may have the defect.
The issue stems from excess lithium deposits in the batteries, which increase electrical resistance and can cause the batteries to overheat during fast charging. This overheating could potentially lead to a fire, posing a risk of injury.
Owners are advised to avoid using fast chargers until a fix is implemented. Nissan will provide a free software update through dealerships. The company noted there are no warning signs before a battery fire may occur.
Notification letters informing customers of the safety concern will be mailed on October 24, with additional updates once the repair solution is available. The affected batteries were produced at Nissan’s Smyrna, Tennessee plant.
