Thailand’s Tourism Minister has announced that the government will decide on whether to introduce a Travel Fee for foreign visitors within the next four months, with the goal of funding tourist safety and infrastructure improvements.

Atthakorn Sirilatthayakorn, Minister of Tourism and Sports, stated on Friday that a decision regarding the collection of a Travel Fee has not yet been made. The issue will be reviewed during the current government’s four-month timeframe, aiming for a swift and definitive resolution.

The Minister explained that any funds collected would be dedicated to enhancing visitor welfare and safety, as well as developing tourism infrastructure and services. The proposed fund would operate similarly to a sports fund, supporting initiatives related to tourism.

If implemented, effective communication will be essential to inform tourists about the purpose of the charge and the additional measures in place to ensure their safety and satisfaction.

Previously, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports indicated that the Travel Fee could help ease the burden on the state budget, which currently supports and compensates tourists in safety-related incidents. The collected funds might also be used to cover travel insurance for visitors and contribute to the administration and growth of Thailand’s tourism industry. Similar levies are already in place in several other countries.

The proposed rate for air arrivals is 300 baht per person per entry. For land and water entries, the fee would also be 300 baht per person, an increase from the current 150 baht, with multiple entries allowed over a period of 30 to 60 days.

However, details regarding the policy, including coverage of insurance and other specifics, are still under final review.
