A tuk-tuk driver had his license suspended and was fined 2,000 baht by the Department of Land Transport for overcharging Japanese tourists. Additionally, he was fined 500 baht for not wearing the appropriate uniform.
The 29-year-old driver, hailing from Roi Et province, received the penalties on Tuesday. His license was suspended for 90 days, and he was mandated to participate in a three-hour training session focusing on drivers’ conduct.
The actions taken were in response to a complaint lodged by a Japanese tourist, detailing an incident where he and three other drivers allegedly demanded 1,500 baht each for a short 5-kilometer journey from Sukhumvit soi 18 to Thaniya Plaza on a Monday night. Eventually, the fare was settled at 2,000 baht after negotiations.
