The “Safety Phuket Island Sandbox” initiative will officially commence on November 26 at Pa Tong beach and Walking Street in Muang district. It is part of a pilot scheme by the Public Health Ministry to promote health and safety for tourists. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin will preside over the opening event. Dr. Kusak Kukiattikoon, the Phuket Public Health Office chief, confirmed the details.
The campaign, aimed at enhancing tourists’ confidence in local medical care, will run for 100 days. The program will be implemented in 13 provinces with high tourist traffic, with each province’s health service provider boards taking responsibility for its execution. The initiative includes the provision of a “sky doctor” medical response team, the awarding of Green Health certificates to health-promoting hotels and tourist attractions, and improvements in hospital facilities and medical care quality. Additionally, food safety for street food vendors will be prioritized.
In addition to Phuket, the program will be expanded to 12 other provinces, including Bangkok, Nan, Sukhothai, and Ayutthaya. According to Dr. Thanit, the Phuket sandbox project will focus on providing emergency medical units at Pa Tong beach, ensuring rabies protection, offering free influenza vaccination to 100,000 tourism workers, obtaining Street Food Good Health certification, establishing a Travel Medicine Centre, and introducing a digital disease reporting platform.
